Jiaogulan is native to the mountainous regions of China and other Asian countries. Medicinal use of Jiaogulan began during the Ming Dynasty, during which it was used for throat problems, edema and tumors. In the Orient, Jiaogulan is also called Xiancao, which means "Immortality Herb," due to its extensive healing powers. It is similar in properties to Korean (Panax) Ginseng, even though the two plants are unrelated. Recent research indicates that Jiaogulan shows promise in the areas of cholesterol regulation and in lowering blood pressure. Jiaogulan is also a powerful antioxidant and has adaptogenic properties. It is also thought to be beneficial for good digestion and nutrient absorption. Studies have indicated that Jiaogulan improves immune system function and may improve heart function, increasing strength and stamina. In China, Jiaogulan is often used as an anti-inflammatory, a detoxifier, a cough remedy and as a treatment for chronic bronchitis.
