Oregano Leaf is an aromatic Mediterranean herb with a long history as a food additive and medicinal plant. Oregano is a member of the mint family, which also includes Sage, Marjoram, Thyme, Hyssop, Basil and Lavender. Oregano is most associated with Italian cuisine (including pizza), but it has also been used in Greek cooking for centuries. Oregano Leaf has been used medicinally for at least as long as it has been used in cooking. Ancient Greeks used Oregano Leaf to treat dropsy, convulsions, poisoning, coughs, asthma, indigestion and headache. Oregano was also used to prevent seasickness, to relieve swelling and even as a hair restorative. Oregano Leaf is still used as an expectorant and as a digestive aid, and it may also help to rid the intestines of parasitic worms. Oregano has also been used in the treatment of menstrual problems, and recent research has focused on Oregano Leaf's promise as an antioxidant, antifungal and antibacterial. Oregano Leaf contains gallic acid, carvacrol and tannic acid, which aids in healing and has astringent properties.
