Coltsfoot is a traditional herbal remedy employed around the world for the treatment of coughs and respiratory problems. It is native to Europe, North America and most of Asia. Made from the flowers and hoof-shaped leaves of the plant, Tussilago farfara, Coltsfoot has been employed by traditional herbalists in the form of a tea to treat the persistent cough associated with bronchitis, silicosis and emphysema. Other herbal practitioners have used the herb in blends intended to be smoked to relieve coughs, though the logic behind this use is highly questionable and could lead to more respiratory irritation. It is often used in combination with Horehound or Marshmallow as a cough remedy. Coltsfoot has soothing antispasmodic properties, because the leaves contain mucilage, bitter glycosides, tannins and zinc, a mineral that has been shown to have marked anti-inflammatory effects. But the herb also contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which are potentially toxic in large doses, especially to those with liver problems. The German Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances recommends Coltsfoot Leaf for acute catarrh of the respiratory tract, with cough and hoarseness, and mild inflammation of the oral and pharyngeal mucosa.
