The name, Boneset, comes to us because it was used in the early twentieth century as a treatment for a strain of influenza known as "breakbone fever." Today, we rely on it for the treatment of body aches, fevers and upper respiratory tract congestion.

History and Uses:
Boneset is one of the best remedies for the relief of symptoms that accompany influenza. The American Indians introduced Boneset to early colonists as a sweat-inducer, an old treatment for fevers. They also used Boneset for all fever-producing illnesses,
such as influenza, cholera, malaria and typhoid. Additionally, this herb was used routinely to relieve arthritis and treat colds, indigestion, constipation and loss of appetite. The primary constituents of this herb include rutin, quercetin, kaempferol, eupatorin and sesquiterpene. Chemicals in Boneset do have some mild diuretic effects (which promote urine flow) and laxative activity, making it slightly useful for relieving constipation. Because it also encourages sweating, Boneset may be effective when used for lowering fever, and it is
said to relieve the muscle discomfort associated with flu. Furthermore, because it is believed to cause mucus to thin, it may be helpful for breaking up lung congestion. Boneset's leaves and flowering tops are used in therapeutic treatments, and the herb was listed as a treatment for fever in the United States Pharmacopoeia from 1820 through 1916, and in the National Formulary, the pharmacists' manual, from 1926 through 1950, due to its diaphoretic, aperient, cathartic, antispasmodic and emetic properties. Currently, however, the use of Boneset is limited, because other drugs have been considered more effective. The name, Boneset, is derived from the use of this herb in treating flu, known as "breakbone fever" that caused bone pain in the early part of the twentieth century.
