History and Uses:
Yerba Santa is a small evergreen shrub that is indigenous to the dry hills of southern California and northern Mexico.  The Native Americans smoked or chewed the leaves of Yerba Santa as a treatment for asthma.  In fact, it is still used by herbal enthusiasts for bronchial congestion, asthma and hayfever.  There are many benefits to this herb.

Yerba Santa is said to quiet a nagging cough, help clear the chest of phlegm and relieve congestion due to allergies.  Yerba Santa can be used as either a dry herb or extract. To use as a dry herb, mix one tablespoon of the herb in eight ounces of warm water, and drink one cup daily. Yerba Santa, which means "Holy Weed," was so named by Spanish missionaries after having been introduced to its benefits by local Indian tribes.  In addition to its effects as a bronchial remedy, Yerba Santa has also been used as an appetite stimulant, a digestive aid and as a treatment for hemorrhoids.  It was also formerly used as a poultice for sores and acne.  Native Americans also used Yerba Santa as an anti-inflammatory and to treat colds, allergies and rheumatism.  Recent investigations into Yerba Santa have yielded twelve new flavonoids that showed promise as anticarcinogens, and it may also chemo-protective properties.
