History and Uses:
Sandalwood comes from a small tree native to southern Asia, including India, Indochina and Indonesia. Sandalwood has an odor that is displeasing to insects but pleasant to humans. For this reason, Sandalwood is sometimes used to line chests and boxes in which clothing or blankets are stored. Sandalwood is soft and easily carved and is important in the Hindu faith, being used to construct temples, for cremations and in making incense. Sandalwood is made into a paste that is applied to the foreheads of followers of Vishnu and Shiva, and it was also employed medicinally, being used in India and China as a treatment for gonorrhea, stomachache and vomiting. Europeans used Sandalwood to treat fever and pain, and it is often used to treat sore throat, cough and bronchitis. Studies have shown that Sandalwood may slow the growth of the herpes virus, and Sandalwood paste has been used to treat acne, rash and dry skin. Sandalwood is said to act as an antiseptic in the urinary tract and has been approved by Commission E for use in the treatment of bladder infections.
