History and Uses:
Orris Root consists
of the rhizomes, or underground stems, of three species of iris, which
are virtually indistinguishable medicinally. Orris Root is a fixative
used in potpourri for its color and its scent, which is similar to violets.
One source of Orris Root is cultivated around Florence, Italy, as an agricultural product under
the name of ghiaggiuolo. The rhizomes are dug up in August and freed of
the rootlets and brown outer bark, and then they are dried and packed in casks
for sale. Orris Root was often used as a flavoring in candies and as a base
for toothpastes and perfume. Orris Root tea was used to treat bronchitis,
colds, coughs, diarrhea and dropsy. Orris Root is still used to strengthen
gums and freshen breath. The herb is said to have diuretic, emetic and cathartic properties, and
Orris Root can also be used for colic and liver congestion.
Recommended Dosage:
Take two (2) Capsules, one (1) to two (2) times each day with water at mealtimes.
Contraindications:
Orris Root should not be used with prescription diuretic medicines. Large amounts (many times the recommended dosage) will cause nausea, vomiting, purging and colic.
