History and Uses:
Squaw Root is an herb derived from the rhizome and roots of a small North American perennial.  It is called Squaw Root, as well as Blue Cohosh, because of its historical use by Native American women who brewed a bitter tea from the herb to relieve menstrual cramps and ease the pains associated with childbirth.  Squaw Root tea was also found to induce uterine contractions to speed labor and delivery and was widely used by Native Americans and early settlers to treat common maladies, such as sore throat, rheumatism, anxiety, bronchitis and colic.   Modern herbalists often recommend Squaw Root to induce menstruation and as uterine stimulant and antispasmodic.  It is also frequently employed as a diuretic to eliminate excess fluids, as an expectorant to treat congestion and as a diaphoretic to eliminate toxins by inducing sweating.  Traditional herbalists will often combine Squaw Root and Black cohosh to effect a more balanced treatment for nerves, and to enhance the herbs antispasmodic effects.  It is combined with other herbs to promote their effects in treating bronchitis, nervous disorders, urinary tract ailments and rheumatism.   Researchers studying Squaw Root isolated an alkaloid, methylcytisine, which closely resembles nicotine in its ability to stimulate intestinal activity, raise respiration and elevate blood pressure.

Recommended Dosage:
Take two (2) capsules, one (1) to two (2) times each day with water at mealtimes.

Contraindications:
This herb should be used with caution; it can be quite irritating to the mucous membranes and should be used only under the supervision of a physician.  Pregnant women should not use this herb until ready to deliver, as it stimulates contractions.  Squaw Root should not be taken for an indefinite period of time (a week at a time is recommended) and should be avoided by patients with hypertension and heart disease. Children should not take Blue Cohosh. The berries of the plant are toxic and not used as medicine.
