History and Uses:
Figwort is native to Europe, Central Asia and North America. It is found wild in marshy areas but is also cultivated for its use in herbal medicine. Because the nodes on its root resemble swollen lymph nodes, it was used in the treatment of lymphatic glands and also in the treatment of swellings, abscesses and other skin eruptions. Figwort gained some fame in the seventeenth century during the siege of La Rochelle by the forces of Richelieu, where it was eaten in order to stave off starvation. In traditional Chinese medicine, Figwort is used as a Yin tonic. It has also been used as a stimulating cardio-tonic, having action similar to that of Rehmannia Root. Figwort has been used with great success, both internally and externally, in the treatment of skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis, for which it has been used in combination with Burdock Root and Yellow Dock Root. Figwort is also a mild diuretic and laxative and has been used with Rhubarb Root for such purposes. Active constituents of Figwort include saponins, glycosides and flavonoids. Figwort is considered to be among the most useful herbs used as a general tonic for the lymphatic system.
