History and Uses:
Chamomile is one of the oldest favorites amongst garden herbs, and its reputation as a medicinal plant shows little signs of abatement.  The Ancient Egyptians revered it for its virtues, and from their belief in its power to cure ageing, dedicated it to their gods.  No plant was better known to the country folk of old, having been grown for centuries in English gardens for its use as a common domestic medicine.  Chamomile has been described by the Germans as alles zutraut, meaning "capable of anything," because of the belief that Chamomile can cure almost anything.  Teas, ointments, lotions, extracts and inhalants have been made and used for both medicinal and cosmetic purposes. The active principles are a volatile oil of pale blue color, a little anthemic acid (a bitter principle), tannic acid and a glucoside.  Chamomile's high content of the amino acid, tryptophan, has been used for sleeplessness and insomnia since the 1600s.  Chamomile is an excellent herb for people that complain about every little thing, as well as for those who have the urge to urinate constantly.  It is said to help restore an exhausted nervous system and is served in some European hospitals to calm patients.  It is also thought that Chamomile tea will treat headaches that result from caffeine withdrawal.  It is also wonderful for soothing an upset stomach.  Chamomile is frequently used as a mild sedative to calm the nerves, reduce anxiety and induce a state of pleasant relaxation without disrupting normal function or interfering with motor coordination.  Chamomile is considered a carminative, calming upset stomachs and easing digestion.  Chamomile's effectiveness is believed to be due to its anti-inflammatory properties, soothing ulcers and reducing gastritis and other mucous membrane inflammations.  One of the most popular uses for Chamomile has been in creams and lotions for the skin. Treatment with Chamomile is thought to help burns, wounds, infections, acne, etc., heal more rapidly.  Chamomile is considered an antibacterial that may be particularly effective against staph and strep toxins, as well as an antifungal that combats Candida albicans.

Recommended Dosage:
Take one (1) to two (2) capsules, two (2) times each day with water at mealtimes.

Contraindications:
Those who suffer from allergies to members of the daisy family (ragweed) should consult a doctor or allergist before using Chamomile. Chamomile contains natural blood thinners (coumarins) and should not be taken by those using the prescription drug Coumadin or other blood thinners. Because Chamomile is a uterine stimulant, pregnant women should discuss its use with their physicians before using it.  Chamomile may cause drowsiness.
