Figs have been valued by many generations, particularly in the Mediterranean areas, as both a food and medicine.  Figs are best known for their mild laxative action, in addition to their highly nutritive value.  Whether eaten fresh or dried, this fruit is a nutritional treat that provides valuable health benefits.

History and Uses:
Fig, the succulent fruit of the common Fig tree, has been valued by many cultures for over five thousand years.  The plant is indigenous to Syria, Asia Minor and Persia, and is now also found in most Mediterranean countries, and cultivated in the southern portions of the United States. The Fig tree is prized for both the beauty of its foliage and also for the sweetness of its fruit.  Ficus carica is a small tree or bush, rarely growing higher then twenty feet (the breadth of the tree is often wider than the height.)  References to Figs can easily be found throughout the Scriptures, and it is also well documented that Figs were a primary staple food for the Greeks.  Their athletes fed almost entirely on Figs to increase their strength and swiftness.  The Fig also plays an important role in much of Roman mythology.  The primary constituent of Figs is dextrose, of which they may contain as much as fifty percent.  Figs have been long employed for their excellent nutritive value in both their fresh and dried states, particularly in Western Asia and southern Europe.  Figs are used medicinally for their mild laxative action, and they are often used in the preparation of laxative confections and syrups.  It is believed that the laxative property resides in the saccharine juice of the fresh fruit and in the indigestible seeds and skin of the dried fruit.  Figs are also demulcent as well as nutritive, and demulcent decoctions are often prepared from Figs in the treatment of catarrhal infections of the throat and nasal areas.  The seed oils can be used either as a lubricant (via carrier oils) when eaten, and Fig leaves have been used in making perfume (providing a woody/musky scent).  The latex from the tree, after being dried and powdered, has been used to tenderize meats and also to make cheeses.

Recommended Dosage:
Take two (2) Capsules, one (1) to two (2) times each day with water at mealtimes.

Contraindications:
Some people may have skin or other allergic reactions to products made from the leaves or milky sap of the Fig tree, and thus, Fig should first be tested in small doses.  This product is derived entirely from the Fig fruit, and most people who cannot use products made from the Fig leaf or milky sap can still use this product safely.  However, it is recommended that very small doses be used at first to assure that you do not have an allergic reaction.  The herb may produce irritation in sunlight.
