Boswellia is found throughout Western and Central India. Boswellia has attracted much attention in the world medical community because it possesses anti-inflammatory properties that are similar to prescription medications and have been effective against most types of induced arthritis, yet Boswellia does not appear to have any of the unpleasant side effects. Research conducted in India found that an extract of Boswellia was more beneficial, less toxic and more potent than the standard drug of choice for rheumatic disorders, benzoyl hydrotropic acid, which is preferred over other anti-inflammatories such as indomethacin, phenylbutazone or acetylsalicylic acid. Boswellic acids are believed to suppress the proliferating tissue found in the inflammed areas and also prevents the breakdown of connective tissue. The mechanism is similar to the action of non-steroidal groups of antiarthritic drugs, apparently with none of the side effects, gastric irritation and ulcerogenic activity associated with those medications. A purified compound of the Boswellia is marketed in India, under the brand name, Sallaki. Many studies conducted since the original study have confirmed that Boswellia serrata possesses potent anti-inflammatory and antiarthritic qualities. Boswellia was found to improve blood supply to the joints and restore integrity of vessels weakened by spasm. Boswellia may also be useful for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, again with no side effects as those seen with traditional drugs of choice.
