Histor and Uses:
Goldenrod is a common garden and wild plant in Europe, the Americas and is distributed worldwide. The
part of this plant used medicinally is the above-ground portion. The genus name, Solidago,
is derived from the Latin word, solide, which means "to make whole." During the Boston
Tea Party, when English tea was dumped into the Boston Harbor, American Colonists drank
Goldenrod tea instead, which gave it the nickname, "Liberty Tea." As a growing
plant, Goldenrod is often falsely accused of being an intensely allergenic plant,
because of its unfortunate tendency to bloom brightly at the same time as, and
often in the same locations of, the truly allergenic Ragweed. However, its pollen
is actually very heavy and falls quickly to the ground, rather than becoming
airborne. Actual allergic reactions to this gorgeous plant are unusual.
There are numerous species of Goldenrod, but all seem to possess similar medicinal
properties, and various species are used interchangeably. In Europe, Goldenrod
is used as a supportive treatment for bladder infections, irritation of the
urinary tract and for bladder/kidney stones. Goldenrod is said to increase the flow of
urine, helping to wash out bacteria and kidney stones, and it may also directly
soothe inflamed tissues and calm muscle spasms in the urinary tract. As an anti-inflammatory urinary antiseptic, Goldenrod may be used for cystitis,
urethritis and the like. Typically,
this herb isn't used as a cure by itself, but rather as a support for other, more
definitive treatments, such as antibiotics. The primary chemical constituents
of Goldenrod include saponins, diterpenes, phenolic glycosides, Quercetin, Rutin,
inulin, essential oil, tannins and other bioflavonoids.
Goldenrod is useful for the treatment of upper respiratory catarrh, whether
acute or chronic, and it helps to thin mucus secretions and relieve congested
mucus. The herb has also been used in combination with other herbs in the treatment
of influenza. It is said that Goldenrod is beneficial when used for flatulent dyspepsia.
It is used to promote the healing of wounds, and as
a gargle, it can relieve sore throat, laryngitis and pharyngitis. Goldenrod
also has had several other topical applications: as a wash or compress for wounds,
headaches and rheumatism, as a douche for yeast infections, as a poultice
for bee stings, as a hair rinse for blond hair and as a
bath herb for facial
steams.
Recommended Dosage:
Take two (2) to three (3) Capsules, one (1) time each day with water at a morning or mid-day mealtime.
Contraindications:
Currently, there are no known interactions with the use of Goldenrod; however, it is advisable not use Goldenrod in the presence of edema (swelling) due to heart or kidney problems. Goldenrod is a member of the Compositae (daisy) family and should not be taken by those who are allergic to daisies.
