History and Uses:
Dulse is a red seaweed that grows in the North Atlantic and Northwest Pacific. The seaweed grows attached to rocks in the inter-tidal zone, where the water is cold, the current is swift and the ocean bottom is clean; and it grows so quickly in the summer that it can be picked every two weeks. Dulse is used both as a food and as a medicine. It is eaten as a tasty snack in Nova Scotia and elsewhere and can be eaten sun-dried, fried, baked with cheese, or eaten fresh off the rocks. Dulse can also be used as a condiment or sprinkled on salads and soups and is cultivated for such use in Nova Scotia and sold in the produce section of grocery stores under the name, Sea Parsley. Dulse is very rich in vitamin B6, vitamin B12, iron, fluoride and potassium, and it is an excellent source of non-animal protein that is used medicinally because of its high vitamin and nutrient content. Dulse is a terrific nutritional supplement for dieters and vegetarians who lack sufficient protein intake. Dulse is also found as a common ingredient in many nutritional drink mixes, particularly "green drinks."
Recommended Dosage:
Take one (1) to three (3) capsules each day with water at mealtimes.
Contraindications:
Currently, there appear to be no warnings or contraindications with the use of Dulse; however, the iodine content in Dulse may cause hyper- or hypothyroidism if taken in excessive amounts and may interfere with existing treatment for abnormal thyroid function. Seek the advice of a qualified medical practitioner if you wish to use Dulse as a food or medicine in these cases.
