History and Uses:
Blue Vervain is a bristly perennial native to the northern United States and Canada and also can be found in England. The quadrangular stem reaches a height of two to five feet and bears leaves that are oblong-lanceolate, serrate and three to six inches long; some
of the lower leaves are lobed at the base. The small, deep blue or purplish-blue flowers grow in dense spikes, two to three inches long, and are arranged in a panicle. The fruit consists of four nutlets, which ripen soon after the plant flowers. Native American tribes used Blue Vervain to treat fever, colds and lung congestion. The Cherokees used it as a remedy for dysentery and diarrhea. The herb has been used as an antiperiodic, diaphoretic, emetic, expectorant, tonic, vermifuge and vulnerary and has also been called a natural tranquilizer and used as an antiperiodic for nervous problems. A warm tea, taken often, was recommended for fevers and colds, especially for getting rid of congestion in the throat and chest. It can also be used for insomnia and other nervous conditions and is often effective for eliminating intestinal worms. Taken cold, the infusion acts as a tonic. Externally, Blue Vervain tea is said to heal sores and wounds.
