History and Uses:
Citrus Pectin is a carbohydrate concentrated in the peel and pulp of ripe citrus fruits and is used commercially in the manufacturing of drugs, cosmetic and foods. Pectin is the ingredient that makes jellies jell. Citrus Pectin may be useful in the treatment of metastatic malignancy. Citrus Pectin molecules bind to receptors on malignant cells, which may prevent these cells from penetrating into nearby healthy tissue. By working to inhibit the spread of malignant disease, Citrus Pectin would keep the body's immune system from becoming overwhelmed. Many animal studies have been conducted with regard to prostate cancer, and one study conducted in Scandinavia found that Citrus Pectin slowed the doubling time of PSA, the hormone used as an indicator of prostate cancer spread. Animal studies in the area of breast melanoma have also showed promising results, but as yet few human studies have been undertaken. Citrus Pectin has been used as a digestive aid.
