History and Uses:
Alfalfa's name is derived from the Arabic, al-fac-facah, which means "father of all foods." The genus name, Medicago, refers to Medea in North Africa, from where this plant is thought to have originated, and its species name, sativa, means "with a long history of cultivation." The Chinese have long used Alfalfa Leaf to stimulate appetite and to treat digestive problems, particularly ulcers, and Ancient Indian Ayurvedic physicians used Alfalfa Leaf to treat ulcers, arthritis pains and fluid retention. In the New World, early Americans employed ther plant to treat arthritis, boils, cancer, scurvy and urinary and bowel problems. Pioneer women thought it helped menstruation problems. Alfalfa Leaf has also been a traditional treatment for infections resulting from surgical incisions, bed sores and inner ear problems. Alfalfa Leaf is an excellent natural source of most vitamins, including vitamins A, D, E and K. Vitamin K is critical in blood clotting, and Alfalfa Leaf is believed to help regulate normal clotting without impeding circulation. It also contains trace minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorous and potassium. The plant is so rich in calcium that the ashes of its leaves are almost 99% pure calcium. Alfalfa Leaf is also higher in protein than many other plant foods and is a rich natural source of chlorophyll, vitamins, minerals and protein. Alfalfa's deep root system pulls these valuable minerals from the soil. It is considered an excellent nutritive food for convalescing people. rutin, silicon, zinc, calcium, copper, choline, folate, iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium, phosphorus, saponins, alpha-carotene, beta-carotene (useful against both heart disease), as well as B-vitamins and vitamins A, D, E and K. Alfalfa leaves contain eight essential amino acids and are a good source of chlorophyll, and they also contain flavones, isoflavones, sterols and coumarin derivatives.
Recommended Dosage:
Take two (2) Capsules, two (2) or three (3) times each day with water at mealtimes.
Contraindications:
Alfalfa should not be taken by those who have autoimmune problems (lupus, etc.), nor should it be taken by pregnant women. Ingestion of very large amounts (the equivalent of several servings) of the seed and/or sprouts or supplements has been linked to the onset of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), the autoimmune illness characterized by inflamed joints and a risk of damage to kidneys and other organs. The chemical responsible for this effect is believed to be canavanine. Those taking prescription anticoagulants such as Coumadin, etc., should avoid this herb.
Do not take Alfalfa without first talking to your doctor if you are taking: Azathioprine (examples: Imuran), Cyclosporine (examples: Sandimmune, Neoral, Sang Cya) or Prednisone. Alfalfa may lower the amount of potassium that you have in your blood, and it may cause you to have belly pain, pass more gas or have larger and more frequent bowel movements (BMs). It may also cause you to have diarrhea (loose BMs).
