Pet Herb Descriptions - Support for Cats & Dogs

Agrimony, a member of the Rose family, is a perennial plant native to Europe. Historically, in battle, it was used to promote blood clotting of bleeding wounds. Today, it is used mainly as a gastrointestinal tonic to treat pets with digestive disorders such as diarrhea. Agrimony contains astringent, antiviral, tonic, diuretic, coagulant and anti-inflammatory properties that can be used to treat animals suffering from ailments such as incontinence, dyspepsia, colitis, cirrhosis, cystitis, asthma, bronchitis and arthritis.  See our formula for Diarrhea.

Alfalfa, a member of the pea family, was originally native to Asia, Europe and North Africa, but is now cultivated throughout the world. Traditionally Alfalfa is known as one of the best choices in pet herbs for the treatment of arthritis, and rheumatism due to its anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties. Aloe Vera, a member of the Lily family, is originally a native of Southeast Africa, but is now cultivated in the West Indies and other tropical countries. Aloe has a clear gel within its leaves that has excellent healing properties for external use on your pets’ burns and wounds. It also has a yellow colored sap, at the base of the leaves, which can be used as a laxative.  See our formula for Constipation.

Anise, a member of the Parsley family, is native to Greece and Egypt.  Historically Anise seeds were used as a diuretic to treat digestive problems, and fight infections. Anise will help your pet if it suffers from flatulence, bloating, indigestion, or nausea. Astragalus, a member of the pea family, is a perennial plant native to northern and eastern China. Today it is harvested throughout much of the world. Astragalus contains antiviral, antibacterial, diuretic, anti-inflammatory, blood cleansing and immune strengthening properties that are useful for treating pets with various infections and illnesses. Traditionally it has been used in the treatment of the liver, lungs, heart, thyroid, kidneys, digestive tract and immune system. Barberry is a perennial shrub native to Europe that now grows naturally throughout much of North America. Berberine, the main alkaloid of Barberry, is a potent antibiotic, antibacterial and antimicrobial that has shown exceptional results in combating e-coli, Giardiasis, and parasites in the digestive tract of animals. Bilberry is a perennial shrub that is native and grows throughout much of Europe, Asia and North America. Historically, Bilberry was used to help the night vision of British pilots during the Second World War. It contains rich nutrients that can benefit pets with eye disorders such as cataracts or macular degeneration, and is also useful for pets suffering from arthritis, cramps or high blood pressure. Bistort is a hardy perennial that is native to northern Europe, Siberia, Asia and Japan. Traditionally it was used to treat respiratory ailments and stomach disorders such as dysentery, diarrhea and vomiting, making it an excellent herb for pets suffering from these ailments. Black Walnut (also known as American Walnut) is a tree native to eastern North America. It is highly regarded for its ability to expel worms and parasites from animals. Black Walnut is identified as a “vermifuge” (a substance taken to expel or control parasites or worms). The active constituent, Juglone, is a toxin with antifungal properties that contributes to the excellent results achieved as a dewormer. It has also been reported to help alleviate constipation, fight fungal infections, and help relieve stomach upset.

Boswellia is a tree that is native to central India. It contains anti-inflammatory properties that are known to be highly effective in reducing inflamed tissue, while improving blood circulation to the affected area. Reports have shown that dogs suffering from hip Dysplasia and spinal arthritis have positive results while using this herb. Some pet owners have reported that when they discontinue use, their pets’ condition starts to deteriorate quickly. Burdock, a member of the Sunflower family, is a Eurasian import that now grows throughout most of North America. Burdock is a blood purifier that is very useful for cleansing the kidneys, blood, and liver of your pet. Caraway is an annual plant that grows wild throughout much of Russia, Europe, Asia, North Africa and North America. It can be beneficial to animals suffering from indigestion, flatulence, colic, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting or dyspepsia. Cardamom is a perennial plant that is native to Sri Lanka and India. Today it is grown and harvested throughout much of Asia, Guatemala and Indonesia. Cardamom is considered to be a mild stimulant that can be beneficial to a pet suffering from indigestion, nausea, flatulence, vomiting or enuresis. Cascara Sagrada is a tree native to Pacific North America. Historically Native American Indians used Cascara Sagrada in the treatment of constipation and upset stomachs. It is known to be a safe laxative for animals, as well as humans, and is often employed as a remedy for mild or chronic constipation. Catnip, a member of the mint family, is native to Eurasia and now grows throughout much of North America. Catnip is primarily used as a sedative or calming herb. It may help your pet by aiding in the relief of intestinal gas, diarrhea, and upset stomachs. Cayenne, a member of the nightshade family, is native to the tropical regions of Central and South America. Today it is harvested throughout much of the tropics, including India and Africa. Cayenne contains anthelmintic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiseptic, astringent, carminative, diaphoretic, expectorant, stimulant, and circulatory stimulating properties that can be valuable in treating pets with a variety of ailments. These ailments include headaches, arthritis, colic, motion sickness, diarrhea and flatulence. Chamomile, a member of the Sunflower family, is a native of western Asia and Europe. Today it is harvested throughout much of the world. Historically, Chamomile has been used by many different cultures for a variety of ailments. It has excellent antiseptic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and mild sedative properties. Chickweed is a small plant originally native to Asia and Europe. Today it has migrated and grown wild throughout the world. Internally, Chickweed has mild laxative qualities that can help provide relief for your pet when constipated. Cinnamon, a tree native to India and Sri Lanka, is currently harvested throughout the temperate regions of the world, especially India, China, Madagascar, Brazil, and the Philippines. Traditionally Cinnamon was, and still is, used for treating viral conditions such as colds and flu, and digestive problems such as flatulence, dyspepsia, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and intestinal colic in humans and animals. Cloves are flowers native to the Philippine and Molucca Islands (both part of Indonesia). Today they are also grown in Sumatra, Madagascar, Tanzania, Brazil and India. Traditionally Cloves have been used for pets in the treatment of intestinal parasites, vomiting, nausea, pain relief, and general digestion problems. Cloves have shown to contain very powerful antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiseptic, anesthetic, and antispasmodic properties. Feverfew, a member of the Sunflower family, is native to southeastern Europe and is now a common plant across Australia, Europe, and North America. In humans, Feverfew is an effective remedy for migraine headaches. It also possesses anti-inflammatory properties that make it beneficial to pets that suffer from arthritis. Garlic, a native of central Asia and Europe, is now grown throughout much of the world. Garlic is very beneficial to pets because of its many nutrients, compounds and properties. It can be used as an antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, blood thinner, immune system stimulant, and blood pressure reducer, just to name a few. Before antibiotics were developed, Garlic was the primary treatment for all types of infections. Gentian is a plant native to the mountainous regions of south-central Europe and Turkey; today it is harvested in those regions as well as North America. Gentian is a very powerful bitter that stimulates digestive secretions of the mouth and stomach to aid in digestion and boost your pets appetite. It is very useful for treating pets suffering from dyspepsia and flatulence, along with stimulating gastric secretions and bile production. Ginger, an herb originally native to Asia, is now cultivated in India, China, North America, West Indies, and throughout the tropical regions. Ginger is most commonly known for its effectiveness as a digestive aid. By increasing the production of digestive fluids and saliva, Ginger helps relieve indigestion, gas pains, diarrhea and stomach cramping. Ginkgo Biloba, a deciduous tree native to China, now grows throughout much of Asia, Europe and parts of North America. Goldenseal, a member of the Buttercup family, is native to North America. It contains astringent, antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-parasitic, hemostatic and anti-inflammatory properties. Horsetail is a perennial plant native to Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas. Historically it was considered to be a wound healing herb. Olive Leaf comes from the Olive tree that is native to Asia Minor and Syria. Today it is cultivated in several Mediterranean countries, Chile, Peru, and South Australia. Olive leaf contains excellent antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties. Studies show pets recovering from a variety of infections using olive leaf, where usual treatments did not work. Olive Leaf has proven to be very effective in supporting an animal’s natural immune and circulatory systems. Olive leaves contain the constituent "Oleuropein", which has the ability to lower blood pressure, increase blood flow in the coronary arteries, relieve arrhythmias and prevent intestinal muscle spasms in animals. Oregon Grape, a member of the Barberry family, can be found in the forests of western North America. It is known for possessing excellent antibacterial and antimicrobial properties that come from its main constituent, berberine. Peppermint is an annual plant grown throughout much of Asia, Europe and North America. The origin of Peppermint is unknown, but dried leaves have been found in Egyptian pyramids dating back to 1000 BC. Peppermint is a popular remedy for animals suffering from gas, indigestion, vomiting, mild colic, motion sickness or abdominal discomfort. Plantain, a perennial plant, is a native of Asia and Europe. Today it can be found in these regions, as well as North America. By most accounts, it is consider to be a weed because it grows in highly compacted areas such as cracks in sidewalks or roadways, and stone driveways. It contains many of the same properties as Slippery Elm and can be used in a similar manner. Plantain can be useful to pets for a variety of ailments including colic, dysentery, gastritis, diarrhea, stomach infections and intestinal tract infections. Psyllium Seed is widely cultivated throughout Asia, Europe, India and North Africa. Historically Psyllium is known as an excellent laxative, and a highly effective remedy for diarrhea. The main constituent, mucilage, has been found to be very useful for soothing and detoxifying gastrointestinal irritations. Pumpkins are native to North America. Today they are harvested throughout the world. Historically Pumpkin was used to treat burns or wounds and expel parasites. Researchers isolated an amino acid called Cucurbitin that is found only in pumpkin seeds and is thought to be responsible for the worm-expelling effect it has on animals. Pumpkin seeds are also useful as a mild diuretic, and well known for improving vision. Red Clover, a member of the Pea family, is native to Asia and Europe. Today it is widely harvested in Australia, Asia, Europe and North America. Red Clover is primarily used as a diuretic, tonic and blood purifier. It also contains antispasmodic and expectorant properties that are beneficial to pets suffering from bronchitis or other pulmonary ailments. Rosemary, a member of the mint family, is a perennial plant native to the Mediterranean region and is harvested throughout much of the world today. Sage, a member of the Mint family, is a perennial plant. It is a native of the Mediterranean region and is harvested throughout much of the world today. Sage contains antibiotic, antimicrobial, antispasmodic, astringent, antiseptic, diaphoretic (sweat inducing) and anti-inflammatory properties that can be beneficial to pets suffering from a variety of ailments. Sage is useful for fighting infections or sores of your pet’s mouth such as gingivitis, sore gums, canker sores and sore throats. Sarsaparilla is a perennial plant found in Mexico, South America, North America, India and the Caribbean. It contains calcium, copper, iron, iodine, manganese, potassium, silicon, sodium, sulfur, B-complex and vitamins A, C and D. Sarsaparilla is said to be a good choice for treating pets with colds, fevers, coughs, hypertension, flatulence, arthritis or catarrhal problems. Senna, originally native to Africa, has migrated to other regions and is now harvested throughout much of Africa, China and India. Senna contains anthraquinone properties that make it a strong laxative. As a laxative it provides two important functions: 1) it stimulates your pets’ colon to increase the flow of fluids within the intestines, 2) it creates strong contractions in the bowels to help expel fecal matter. Slippery Elm is a tree that grows throughout much of eastern North America. Historically, Native Americans used Slippery Elm for both internal ailments (colds, fevers, intestinal problems, etc…), and external ailments (wounds, ulcers, boils, etc…). The main constituent, mucilage, is beneficial for soothing and lubricating the intestinal tract. Stevia, a member of the Aster family, is a perennial shrub native to North and South America. It is a safe, all-natural alternative to artificial sweeteners and refined sugar. Stevia's main constituent, Stevioside, is over 200 times sweeter than sucrose. It also contains antibacterial properties that may be beneficial to pets suffering from bleeding gums, sore throats or other bacterial infections. Stevia is an excellent substitute for sugar when trying to help obese pets lose weight. Thyme, a member of the Mint family, is native to the Mediterranean region of Europe, and now is extensively cultivated in the United States. It contains astringent, antimicrobial, antispasmodic, expectorant, cough suppressant, and infection fighting properties that can be very beneficial to pets. Thyme is useful for pets suffering from bronchitis, colitis, dyspepsia, and irritable bowel. Valerian is native to Europe, Asia, and North America. It is known to help relieve stress by calming the mind and body of both humans and animals. Valerian can be beneficial for pets that have a hard time sleeping or suffer from anxiety. Some pet owners have reported using Valerian to calm their pet during thunderstorms or on trips to the veterinarian or groomer. Wheat Grass has been cultivated for thousands of years, making it impossible to determine its true origin. It is believed to be native to a region in the Near East; but is now grown in over 70 countries. Wheat Grass has been determined to be one of the most beneficial nutritional supplements ever developed for pets.
