Administering Herbs To Your Pets

Here are a few helpful suggestions on administering herbs and medications to your pet. You may find one or two that work great for your pet; or you may find that none of these work and develop a method of your own. Some pets, no matter what you try, may not tolerate herbal powder at all. For them you may need to use an herbal tincture, as these are easier to administer.

mix herbs directly into moist food For all pets, we recommend mixing the herbs directly into a small amount of moist food in between meals when your pet is hungry. This allows the herbs to be more readily absorbed by the body. Start with ¼ - ½ the recommended dosage of herbal powder, and then slowly increase the dose to the suggested level. This allows your pet to become gradually accustomed to the taste of the herbs.

administer herbs on a full stomach If your pet seems to get nauseous or loses its appetite after herbs have been administered, then try administering on a full stomach as this may help correct the problem.

mix herbs into peanut butter For dogs, peanut butter can be used to mix the herbs into. After mixing the herbs and peanut butter together, stick the paste to the roof of the dog's mouth. As the dog licks the peanut butter off the roof of its mouth, the peanut butter will melt and he'll swallow the herbs along with it. This seems to work well for most dogs. (Use only as much peanut butter as your pet will eat at one time mixed with the recommended dosage of herbs).

mix herbs into baby foods For cats, baby food seems to work very nicely. The smell nicely masks the odor of the herbs that are mixed into it. Through trial and error you will find which flavors your pet likes the most. (Use only as much baby food as your pet will eat at one time mixed with the recommended dosage of herbs).

be careful using glass droppers If giving your pet a liquid herbal supplement use a plastic dropper or applicator, as a glass dropper/applicator may break if your pet bites down on it while trying to administer the herbs.

apply liquid herbs to gums and teeth When using liquid herbs, apply to the area between the gums and teeth. Administer the dose slowly, to prevent the pet from gagging or choking. You can also mix the liquid herbs with your pets’ food; but remember that it is most effective when administered directly.

For tablets, pills, and capsules you can disguise with butter, peanut butter, or baby food and slide it down your pets’ throat. For pills and tablets, you can crush it up and mix into food. For capsules, you can open up and mix into food.
