The
American Indians smoked or chewed the leaves of Yerba Santa (Eriodictyon
californicum) as a treatment for asthma. In fact, it is still used by herbal
enthusiasts for bronchial congestion, asthma and hayfever.
There are many benefits to this herb. Yerba Santa can quiet a nagging cough, help clear the chest of phlegm, and relieve congestion due to allergies.
Yerba Santa can be used as either a dry herb or extract. To use as a dry herb, mix 1 tablespoon of the herb in 8 ounces of warm water, and drink 1 cup daily. To use as an extract, mix 10 to 20 drops in a liquid daily.
