Black Cohosh Root is native to North America. The genus name Cimicifuga is from the Latin "cimicus", meaning "insect", and "fugare", meaning "to drive away" (because the plant tends to drive away insects). "Black" refers to the dark colored rhizome, and "Cohosh" is an old Indian word meaning "dark". Native American Indians valued the herb and used it for many conditions, ranging from gynecological problems to rattlesnake bites. Some 19th century American physicians used Black Cohosh for problems such as fever, menstrual cramps, arthritis, and insomnia. Black Cohosh has been valued by many societies for its nutritional support for women. A popular herb for women, it helps restore healthy menses and soothes irritation and congestion of the cervix, uterus and vagina. Black Cohosh can also improve circulation and lower blood pressure by temporarily dilating blood vessels. Having effective amounts of calcium, potassium, magnesium and iron, Black Cohosh Root is also an abundant source of estrogenic substances. Commonly used to relieve arthritis, lower back pain and cramps caused by menstruation, Black Cohosh also relieves mucus production, thus easing persistent coughs caused by asthma, bronchitis and whooping cough. Additionally, Black Cohosh has been used to relieve swelling and soreness typical of rheumatism, and it is also known as safe sedative to relieve both nervousness and anxiety. |

Chasteberry is also known by the names Chaste Tree, Monk's Pepper, Hemp Tree, Indian Spice, Sage Tree, Vitex, and Agnus-castus. Chasteberry has the effect of stimulating and normalizing pituitary gland functions, especially its progesterone function. It may be called an amphoteric remedy, as it can produce apparently opposite effects though in truth it is simply normalizing. It has a reputation as both an aphrodisiac and an anaphrodisiac. It will usually enable whatever is appropriate to occur. The greatest use of Chasteberry lies in normalizing the activity of female sex hormones, and it is thus indicated for dysmenorrhoea, premenstrual stress and other disorders related to hormone function. It is especially beneficial during menopausal changes. In a similar way, Chasteberry may be used to aid the body in regaining a natural balance after the prolonged use of birth control pills. Chasteberry improves the production of progesterone, increases luteinizing hormones and prolactin, and inhibits the release of follicle stimulating hormone. It can help normalize the menses, shortening a long cycle or lengthening a short one. It helps to normalize the functions of the pituitary gland. A study conducted in London (double blind study) showed a 60% group reduction or elimination of PMS symptoms such as anxiety, nervous tension, insomnia, or mood changes, from subjects who were taking Chasteberry capsules daily. |

Dong Quai is one of the most popular herbs used for treating female conditions. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is often referred to as the "female ginseng." Rich in niacin and vitamin E, Don Quai is a good source of iron, cobalt and essential oils. Popular for regulating menstruation, Dong Quai is beneficial for promoting blood flow to the reproductive organs, relieving menstrual cramps, regulating uterine contractions, and alleviating some symptoms related to menopause. A large part of its actions with regard to premenstrual syndrome may be related to its antispasmodic actions, particularly on smooth muscles. Other uses for Dong Quai are to increase the absorption of oxygen by the liver and purify the blood, therefore nourishing the brain, heart, and spleen. Dong Quai has an immediate and stimulating effect on the uterus, especially during pregnancy or delivery. It is a blood tonic, promoting its production and circulation. It is therefore used in treating anemia, boils, headache, venous problems, low immunity, and problems of peripheral blood flow. Dong Quai helps to stabilize blood sugar levels, thereby helping to support calmer moods. Women who are going off birth control pills can use it to help re-establish regular menstrual cycles. It is given to women after birthing to help prevent postpartum bleeding and to build strength. It builds the blood and improves circulation as well as disperses congestion in the pelvic region. It also helps nourish dry, thin vaginal tissues.
